About Homestay:
A Home in the Himalayas. A Family Waiting to Welcome You.
Nestled at roughly 2,200 metres in the Yamuna Valley of Uttarkashi district, Nishni village is one of Uttarakhand's best-kept secrets. Tucked near Hanuman Chatti on the pilgrimage road to Yamunotri Dham, and just 165 km from Dehradun, it sits at the threshold of the Garhwal Himalaya — close enough to reach from Delhi in a day, yet far enough to feel like another world entirely.
Prabal Yamuna Himalaya Darshan Homestay is a family-run guesthouse rooted in this village and its rhythms. We are not a hotel. We are a home — and from the moment you arrive, we treat you like family. Our guests have called our hospitality "unparalleled" and "unmatched," and that is not an accident. It is simply who we are. From our trek guide Anod and his brother Manoj, to the warmth of our elders at home, every member of our family is here to make your stay feel genuine, restful, and memorable.
The Rooms & The View
Our rooms are clean, comfortable, and honest — designed for the traveller who values peace over pretence. The highlight many guests speak of is our 360-degree glass windows, which frame the Himalayan ridgeline in every direction. Wake up to mountains. Fall asleep to stars. There is nothing between you and the landscape.
In colder months, we provide hot water bottles and room heating. Kitchen access is available for guests on extended stays.
Food Grown Here, Cooked Here
Every meal at our homestay comes from the land around you. Nishni village has long practised organic farming on its terraced fields — growing wheat, rajma, potatoes, amaranth, jhangora, mustard, and leafy vegetables, with apples, walnuts, apricots, and chullu ripening in season. What comes to your plate is fresh, pure, and prepared with care.
Our guests regularly tell us that the food surprises them — the distinct flavour of a local kaddu ki sabzi, the simplicity of a dal cooked over a wood flame, the freshness of produce harvested that same morning. This is Pahadi home cooking at its most sincere.
Please note: We serve local vegetarian food only. Items like pizza, momos, and other outside-style dishes are not available here, out of respect for the homestay and the family's way of life.
Trails Starting at Your Doorstep
Nishni is the base camp for the Gulabi Kantha Trek — a route first mapped in 2016 and already beloved by those who have made it to the pink meadows at the summit. The trail climbs from the village to Kandola (3 km), continues to Bangathach where our village's highland summer shelters (chhaniyaan) stand, and reaches Gulabi Kantha peak at roughly 9 km.
Beyond Gulabi Kantha, Nishni opens onto a network of trails that few travellers know:
- Gulabi Kantha Trek — 9 km
- Dodital Lake Trek — 25 km (via the lesser-known route through Agoda village)
- Kunali Bugyal Trek — 4 km
- Sarital Trek — starting from Durbil village
- Jhindi Top Trek — 5 km
- Darwa Pass & Darwa Top, Bandarpunch Base Camp, Saru Tal, Saptarishi Kund, and trails to Seema Thach, Bargan Thach, Pokar Thach, Danwa Top, Sunabala Top, and Bali Pass
Whatever your pace — a single-day hike or a multi-day high-altitude expedition — Nishni is your starting point.
A Living Forest Village
Nishni's Van Panchayat manages 14 hectares of community forest, regulating grazing, firewood collection, and conservation with care passed down through generations. The streams flowing through these forests are the village's lifeline. Nearby stands the sacred Dayarani forest, dedicated to the mother forest spirits, with nearly 500 ancient deodar trees standing as quiet guardians.
The forests and alpine zones around Nishni are home to the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Musk Deer, Bharal (Blue Sheep), Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, and Ghoral. The tree canopy holds Himalayan Birch, Himalayan Fir, Rhododendron, Himalayan Yew (listed on the IUCN Red Data List), Brown Oak, Walnut, and more.
Culture, Festival & Community
In July, Nishni comes alive with the Ashadh Kauthik — a homecoming festival where families from across the Yamuna Valley gather for Jhumelo songs, Ras Nritya (the traditional community circle dance), the procession of village deities carried through the lanes in decorated palanquins, and a shared feast of mountain food. In September, the village honours Someshwar Devata with prayer and Pandav Nritya.
Community life here is active and intact. The gram panchayat, van panchayat, and temple committees continue to govern village affairs in their traditional way.
